Help & Support

Grants from SAKA

SAKA provides help and support for kidney patients receiving their treatment at Sheffield Kidney Institute (Northern General Hospital and satellite units).  We understand the problems and needs of renal patients as the Committee consists of people with close connections to CKD themselves, including patients and carers.

Renal patients, families and carers are welcome to approach us in times of financial hardship. If you are struggling to afford the basic items you need, we may be able to offer help.  The Trustees work in conjunction with the renal social workers and we will look at all requests for help. We will assess individual needs and all enquiries are treated with sympathy and in strict confidence.

If you think SAKA can assist you in any way, please click on the link below to fill in and submit an initial enquiry.  We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Holiday Dialysis

SAKA agrees that dialysis patients should be able to live as normal a life as possible and this includes being able to take holidays. We are able to offer financial assistance when patients have to pay for dialysis away from their home base. We can also cover travel costs to and from the dialysis centre when dialysing away from home. Contact the Treasurer for more details

Benefits Advice

SAKA  funds an Information and Advice service at the Renal Unit at the Northern General Hospital.  This is free to use and any renal patient can make use of this service, which covers benefits advice, housing issues, consumer issues, non-residential care, money matters, legal issues etc.

The sessions are run on our behalf by Age UK, but are open to patients of any age.

So far we have had a lot of success in helping people claim benefits, which they may not otherwise have realised they were entitled to.
